課程概述	This graduate seminar examines current issues in the study of modernity and colonialism and their relation to music in East Asia. Advances in critical studies of the relationship between music and society in the early 20th century have become noticeable in recent years. More studies have gradually been concerned with postcolonial issues regarding Japanese and other imperial projects and their cultural effects as well as colonial collaboration and negotiation across the region. Running through a broad overview of relevant literature, this course aims at gaining insight into the cultural dimensions of colonialism in its ambiguous relationship with modernity.
課程目標	Objective: The purpose of this course is threefold; first, to build up a comparative and relational viewpoint from which to better examine diverse musical experiences in different locales in colonial-era East Asia; second, to seek for new perspectives and methods so as to refresh our understanding of music history of the most disputed period in the region; third, to encourage students to develop some of the issues and methods discussed in the seminar into their graduate research projects. Language Proficiency: The seminar is conducted in English. Readings and discussions are mostly in English. And yet the increasing number of noticeable studies have been carried out by scholars working in different languages in East Asia and beyond: for instance, studies in Japanese regarding the relationship between musical activities and colonial and wartime enterprise. Therefore, students are recommended (but not required) to tackle some readings in Japanese and other East Asian languages.
課程要求	Assignments: 1. Preparing notes of questions, issues and examples (all students / every week): Every week all students must prepare 1-2 page notes for class discussion based on their reading of two required articles. Notes should include questions about the readings, issues for discussion, and examples for demonstration. They are not meant for submission purpose but for a personal use for participating in class discussion. 2. Presenting notes of a critical summary plus questions, issues and examples (two assigned students each week / three, four times a semester): Every week two students are responsible for presenting summaries of two required readings with additional information and critical comments in their own words, and for giving a short presentation to lead class discussion. Presentation materials such as a ppt file should be sent to the instructor and the teaching assistant no later than one day before each class. An effective and creative use of audio-visual materials is highly recommended. 3. Research proposal – final presentation – term paper (all students / once a semester): All students submit a research proposal in English on any topics relevant to this course agenda on Midterm Week, and give a final oral presentation at the end of the semester. And they develop their presentation draft into a 5-10 page English term paper to be submitted due on Week 18. They talk with the instructor about their proposals beforehand according a schedule to be announced around midterms.
